An experimental study was conducted to improve the production of gluconic acid by the mutant Aureobasidium pullulans SG 80 by optimizing different physic-chemical conditions for fermentation. After optimization of different factors, maximum production was obtained with : glucose,8%; (NH4)2SO4,1.0%; K2HPO4,0.15%; CaCO3, 0.25% , MnSO4,,15%; and MgSO4.7H2O,0.25% with maximum utilization of sugar at pH,6.5;volume of medium,30ml; cell density, 5x106 cells/ml; shaker speed ,200 rpm and temperature, 300C.Keywords

One of the principal costs in opencast mine is related to application of loading and haulage equipment. The real challenge of mine management of an opencast mines is to select the proper fleet size of dumpers and shovels and to utilize them effectively; it secures the production needs of a mine as well as minimizes costs of production. Overall equipment effectiveness can be used as a tool to measure the performance and utilization of shovel-dumper operation in opencast mines. Authors of the paper have discussed on the cycle time of shovel and dumper, their dispatching and allocation problem and proper combination in opencast mining operation to optimize the productivity and to reduce the operational cost after reviewing several research artcles.Keywords

Operators of opencast heavy earthmoving machinery (HEMM), during their 8-hour shift duration, are regularly succumbed to the high level of whole body vibration (WBV) amplitudes. Due to long and continuous working in the field, the operators of HEMM may yield to adverse health effects and results in hazardous conditions if the magnitudes repeatedly exceed the permissible limits. Based on extensive literature review, the authors of the paper put forward the recognized harmful adverse health effect of short and longterm WBV exposure of HEMM operators in surface mining and also with the same view with the findings of various researchers in this field and feels that for the safety of operators, long-term understanding of WBV should be carried out instead of short term vibration monitoring.Keywords

Encountering hot zones while excavating tunnels for hydropower projects in the Himalaya, India, is a challenge for civil engineers. Blasting within the hot rock mass can pose serious threats due to possibility of temperature-induced unintended detonation of explosives. Moreover, the paucity of a suitable rock-blasting method for these hot zones sometimes compels engineers to realign the tunnel. Such a realignment is costly and time-consuming. A temperature of 50–98°C was encountered while excavating the rock mass for head race tunnel of Karchham–Wangtoo Hydro-Electric Project, Himachal Pradesh, India. The Directorate General of Mine Safety, India, suggests that blast-holes with temperature greater than 80°C must not be charged and blasted. Similarly, the use of electric or non-electric detonators is discouraged above 70°C because of premature detonation. Hence excavation works were suspended for tunnel construction. A unique drill and blast method has been adopted for blasting the hot strata in the tunnel.
